EE vs. Olilo: Why I’m Finally Leaving My £77/Month Contract Behind

WATCH KL Tech Videos

If you’re tired of the Mainstream ISPs treating you like a number and charging a premium for low speeds, Olilo is the refreshing, prosumer-focused AltNet you’ve been looking for.

With a direct line to company executives via Discord (https://discord.gg/olilo), symmetrical speed tiers (depending on your location and networking structure available), and a “bring your own gear” philosophy, it’s a home-labber’s dream come true.

Is Olilo the Best ISP for Power Users? I’d give it a resounding yes and that’s before I’ve even started using the service!

Why I’m Leaving EE Behind

For years, the UK broadband market has felt like a race to the bottom in terms of customer service, while prices only ever seem to climb.

I was recently paying EE £77 per month for a “1.6Gbps” connection. On paper, it sounds fast, but in reality, it was the classic UK asymmetric trap: 1,600Mbps down, but a measly 110Mbps up. Because Olilo is using open reach infrastructure I still get that exact speed, but at a significantly cheaper cost and more features!

Feature EE (Current) Olilo (Prosumer)
Monthly Cost £77.00 £49.00
DL Speed 1.6Gbps 1.6Gbps
IP Address Dynamic Static (IPv4 & IPv6)
Hardware Locked ISP Router Bring Your Own (BYOR)
Terms Increases price each April. Price lock duration of contract.

When I tried to negotiate a better deal, EE wasn’t interested. They didn’t just say no; they effectively told me to jog on and leave if that’s what I wanted to do! (Customer of 5 years).

Even more shocking was the 11 attempts to contact me to stay! It stands to reason if at the first point of contact they didn’t want to know why should I?

Enter Olilo: The AltNet That Speaks Our Language

I stumbled across Olilo through a Reddit thread while hunting for a better deal. Based in the UK, they are part of the growing wave of AltNets (Alternative Networks) providing full-fiber infrastructure. But Olilo is different.

They offer two distinct paths:

Consumer: Standard “plug and play” experience. They provide a router like all other ISP’s and you just get connected. Bing bang bosh.

Prosumer: This is the sweet spot for the KL Tech audience. It requires you to bring your own equipment (BYOR). No cheap, locked-down ISP routers here—you plug your own pfSense, OPNsense, Ubiquiti gear or my personal favourite Firewalla! directly into the ONT.

The “Prosumer” Perks
On the Prosumer plan, you get a static IP address as standard. For those of us running home servers, Jellyfin/Emby/Plex, or other self-hosted builds, that is non-negotiable.

Need more? You can purchase larger IP blocks for a price that is frankly “cheap” compared to industry standards.

The most striking thing about Olilo isn’t just the tech—it’s the culture. Their primary hub of communication is Discord. It’s unusual, but incredibly soothing to see directorship easily accessible via a chat app.

Even their billing portal is straightforward and doesn’t take 10 minutes to load, unlike EE’s App (if you know you know!).

I recently witnessed how they handle a crisis. Olilo was targeted by a DDoS attack that hit their infrastructure. In the world of “Big Broadband,” you’d get a generic “service status” page with a red dot. With Olilo, the COO immediately addressed the issue on Discord.

The very next day, they issued a comprehensive, highly technical report detailing exactly what happened and how it was resolved.
That level of honesty is unheard of in the UK ISP market.

Transparency Like Never Before.

You can easily identify each staff member via their teams channel on discord aswell.

I’ve set my activation date for May 18th. This aligns perfectly with my 30-day notice for EE, ensuring I don’t pay a penny more to the “big guys” than I have to. The sign-up process was seamless; I provided my EE account details, and Olilo is handling the switch.

I am genuinely hyped for this. Stay tuned, because as soon as I’m connected to the Olilo network, I’ll be running full stress tests and sharing the results here and on the YouTube channel.

Aydan the COO and Co-Founder had this to say exclusively to KL Tech!

“People don’t switch to Olilo just for speed – they switch because they’re tired of the usual ISP bullshit. We’re transparent, we move fast, and we actually give a damn about the experience. Heck what ISP have you seen where you can joke with the higher ups?!? We built Olilo for the people, not for the money.” – Aydan (COO & Co-Founder Olilo)
