NordVPN Manual Credential Configs Will Stop Working Soon!
If you use a lot of 3rd party NordVPN configurations on your Firewalla (or pfSense, OpenWRT, etc.), you might have noticed your VPN connections randomly dying recently. You dig through the logs, restart the box, but some servers just go down and refuse to come back up.
Don’t worry, your hardware isn’t failing. The problem is strictly on NordVPN’s end.
What’s Actually Going On?
Starting this July 2026, NordVPN began rolling out a massive infrastructure overhaul. They are upgrading their servers, which is great for network stability, but comes with a massive catch for homelabbers: they are issuing entirely new IP addresses.
Because the manual .ovpn config files we use to set up VPN clients on our Firewalla boxes or other setups rely on static server IP addresses, your router is basically trying to shake hands with a ghost. The IP is outdated, and the connection drops completely.
Who is Affected?
NordVPN app users are totally insulated from this. The native apps dynamically grab the new IP addresses when servers drop offline, resulting in just a momentary reconnection hiccup. This issue strictly impacts those of us running manual configurations.

The Fix
It’s an annoying but straightforward fix. You just need to pull the fresh config files from the NordVPN database. Only after you have experienced this outage! If you do this before the server probably hasn’t updated and you’ll just be downloading the same old config.
- Head over to the NordVPN Manual Setup page on your dashboard.
- Search for your preferred server region and download the latest
.ovpnconfiguration file. - Open your Firewalla app, navigate to your VPN Client profiles, and replace the broken profile with the newly downloaded file.
NordVPN is rolling these upgrades out slowly over the rest of the year, which is why some users (myself included) are seeing random servers drop off intermittently. Keep your eye on your Firewalla logs; you’ll likely have to repeat this process if another one of your active servers hits the upgrade chopping block later down the road.
