Comet Q – Can now control the Z Fold 7!

The Issue

If you picked up the GL.iNet Comet Q (RMQ1) around launch, you might have hit a wall trying to get it to play nicely with newer high-end Samsung devices. Specifically, out of the box, the Comet Q refused to control the Galaxy Z Fold 7 or the Tab S8 Ultra and above.

When I first ran into this, I spent a lot of time troubleshooting with Cathy over at GL.iNet. At the time, we just couldn’t find a way to pass control through to the Z Fold 7 via the web UI or the app. The official line was that Android system limitations were blocking it, and if you check their official USB-C DP Alt Mode compatibility page right now, it still only lists up to the Z Fold 4.

I kept testing anyway.

Good news: I’ve found a workaround that gets things up and running.

Right now, using this method, I can fully control my Z Fold 7 directly through the web version of the UI. You can technically use the Android app too, but controlling it there isn’t quite as smooth as it should be yet. Stick to the web UI for the best experience.

The Required Settings

First, you need to make sure your Comet Q is updated to the latest firmware. This workaround was tested on V1.8.2 Release 1 (RMQ1). Once you’re updated, log into the web UI and match your configuration to the settings below.

Menu Section Setting Value to Apply
Main Settings Video Type Computer/Other
Main Settings EDID 1920×1080/GLKVM/60Hz
Main Settings Transfer Direct
Audio & Keyboard & Mouse Keyboard & Mouse Toggles Keyboard: ON | Mouse: ON
Audio & Keyboard & Mouse Show Local Cursor ON
Audio & Keyboard & Mouse Mouse Mode Relative
System Settings Device Identity 1080p GLKVM + Logitech inc keyboard

With these exact settings dialled in, I was finally able to click into the web UI screen and move my mouse around. Ironically, even though we are setting the Mouse Mode to Relative, it behaves like direct mouse mode on the Samsung devices.

The Android Samsung Tweak

Getting the mouse working is great, but to make navigation actually usable, you need to map a back button.

Jump over to your Z Fold 7 (or Tab S8 Ultra) and make this quick adjustment in the One UI settings:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap General Management
  3. Select Physical Keyboard
  4. Tap the Logitech inc Keyboard
  5. Choose Customise Keys
  6. Set your Esc key to act as Back.

That’s it. It completely bridges the gap and makes the device fully functional remotely.

Keep in mind that this is highly experimental until GL.iNet pushes a firmware update that officially confirms full compatibility for the newer Samsung line. I’ve sent these details over to their team, so hopefully, we’ll see native support soon. In the meantime, test this out on your own rigs and let me know how it performs.
