📱 Mudi 7 – Is Your Phone Killing Your Productivity? 📶📉

We’ve all been there—sitting in a crowded cafe, trying to get work done on a phone hotspot. But is the “flagship phone” in your pocket actually holding you back? I took the new GL.iNet Mudi 7 and my Samsung Z Fold 7 to Costa on Penarth Road to find out.
The Hardware Advantage The most shocking result wasn’t the 5G speed—it was the hardware gap. On the exact same EE SIM card, in the exact same seat, the Mudi 7 pulled 320 Mbps, while the Z Fold 7 capped out at 110 Mbps. Why? The Mudi 7 is a dedicated networking tool with specialized antennas and a Qualcomm X72 modem designed for one thing: throughput.
The VPN Tax When we switched on WireGuard, speeds dropped across the board, but the stability remained. Interestingly, the Mudi 7 handled the encrypted overhead with much better “Loaded Latency” (86ms) compared to the phone. This means when you’re actually downloading a large file over a VPN, the Mudi 7 keeps your connection feeling snappier.

The Network Battle: EE vs. Giffgaff While Giffgaff (running on O2) gave us a massive 360 Mbps burst, the latency was poor. EE proved that stability is better than hype. With a 20ms ping and double the upload speed of Giffgaff, EE is the clear winner for anyone doing real work (In the location I tested).
Conclusion: If you’re a digital nomad, stop relying on your phone. Dedicated hardware isn’t just a luxury; it’s a 3x performance multiplier.

Thermal Stress Test
Load: 5G + WireGuard + 3 Clients| Operating Mode | Battery Temp |
|---|---|
| Active Charging (to 100%) | 39.0°C |
|
Direct Power Bypass Plugged in at 100% |
35.0°C |
| Battery Only Operation | 29.5°C |
Thermal Performance & Power Bypass
During the charging cycle, the battery temperature peaked at 39°C as it reached 100%. Once fully charged and plugged in, the Mudi V7 appeared to transition to direct power bypass, dropping the temperature to a stable 35°C. Interestingly, when running purely on battery at 100%, the unit cooled down significantly to 29.5°C. This is impressive thermal management considering the load: three active clients, a 5G connection, and an active WireGuard tunnel.
Even users in the US are seemingly getting acceptable service via the mudi7
Mudi 7 EU Review in the USA

Currently using my EU version of the Mudi 7 in the US (Cleveland, OH). SUPER happy with the device. Changed out the IMEI with an old iPhone one and set TTL to 65. Put in a Shield SIM card (operates on T-Mobile network) that offers unlimited 5G data for <$15 per month. Routing through my Wireguard VPN and I am still getting 250Mbps Down and 35Mbps up.
As others mentioned, only change I would recommend is a new case. I picked up a neoprene one on Amazon for $10 and it fits perfectly: [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DR34FCVQ?ref=fed\_asin\_title&th=1](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DR34FCVQ?ref=fed_asin_title&th=1)
Excited to use it internationally in the coming months and see how it performs in Spain and Vietnam.
